Our Story

Since 1947, one family. one factory.

Johnson Furniture Manufacturing has been building commercial furniture in South Carolina for over seven decades. Family-owned across three generations, still shipping direct from the same factory, still built to the specification.

How We Started

A post-war shop with a specific mission.

Johnson Furniture Manufacturing was founded in 1947, in the years just after the war, when American hospitality was expanding coast to coast and every new hotel needed furniture that could survive daily guest use.

The founders started with a small shop, a set of hardwood frames, and a straightforward promise: build commercial-grade furniture to the customer's specification, ship it direct, and stand behind it. Nearly eight decades later, that is still the entire business.

We have never been a distributor. We have never manufactured overseas. We have never chased trends at the expense of durability. What we do here is what we did on day one: cut hardwood, upholster to spec, ship to hotels.

Seven Decades

The evolution of a factory.

The industries around us have shifted, the brands have consolidated, the properties have grown taller. What has not changed is where our furniture is built, who builds it, or how.

Today
Built on Tradition

New ownership since 2025. Same local craftsmanship. Same commercial-grade standards.

The Family

Three generations. The same standard.

Family ownership is not a marketing line here. It is the reason repeat customers still get the same person on the phone, the same signature on the compliance certificate, and the same construction standard on every order.

First Generation · 1947 to 1980s

The founding years

The founding generation built the shop from a single-room operation into a supplier serving hotels and motels across the American Southeast. They set the standards for hardwood frames and customer-spec upholstery that still define our production floor today.

Second Generation · 1980s to 2000s

Scaling the craft

The founders' children expanded the factory, opened brand-standard programs with national hotel families, and formalized the fire-safety and compliance documentation that FF and E buyers now expect from every commercial order.

Third Generation · 2000s to Present

Direct to the buyer

The current generation runs a modern, direct-to-buyer operation with digital spec workflows and coordinated logistics. What has stayed the same: family ownership, factory-direct manufacturing, and the same commitment to hardwood construction.

What Guides Us

Principles that outlast trends.

These are not marketing values. These are the working principles that show up on every order we ship: the joinery, the fabric, the documentation, and the relationship afterward.

01 · Manufacturing First

We are the factory, not a middleman

Every piece is built in our South Carolina facility. When you call, you reach the people who make your furniture. Spec changes go straight to the production floor. Warranty claims are handled by the factory that built the piece, not routed through a distributor.

02 · Hardwood, Not Shortcuts

Kiln-dried hardwood on every frame

Maple and poplar frames, kiln-dried to 8 percent moisture content, corner-blocked and doweled. Not the cheapest way to build a sofa. It is the way to build a sofa that survives a decade of daily hotel use.

03 · Documented Quality

Every claim on paper

Fire safety certificates, brand-standard verification, material compliance, and dimensional confirmation ship with every commercial order. If we say a piece meets a spec, the paperwork proves it, and it ships in the same crate.

04 · Long Relationships

Repeat orders are the only endorsement

The properties we furnished a decade ago still call us for the next renovation cycle. Hotel groups do not re-specify a manufacturer without reason. That is the metric that matters more than any award or advertisement.

Where We Build

A South Carolina factory with the doors open.

Every Johnson piece is manufactured in our facility in South Carolina. The same region since 1947, the same operation today. Hardwood arrives kiln-dried from mills we have used for decades. Cut, framed, sprung, foamed, upholstered, boxed, and shipped, all under one roof.

You are welcome to visit. Buyers, designers, and procurement teams tour the floor regularly, walk the production line, meet the people building their order, and inspect construction in person before committing to a full-property program. Call ahead to schedule.

Common Questions

About the company, answered.

The questions buyers, designers, and property teams ask before they place a first order. If your question is not answered here, we will respond within one business day.

Who owns Johnson Furniture?

Johnson Furniture Manufacturing has been family-owned since 1947. The company is currently operated by the third generation of the founding family, with the second generation still active in the business. Ownership has never left the family, and manufacturing has never left South Carolina.

Where is Johnson Furniture manufactured?

Every piece is manufactured in our South Carolina facility, where the company has operated since 1947. Frames are cut, upholstered, and boxed under one roof by our own crew. We do not manufacture overseas, and we do not resell imported product.

How long has Johnson been in business?

Johnson Furniture Manufacturing was founded in 1947, making the company over seventy years old and currently in its third generation of family ownership. The business has manufactured hospitality-grade commercial furniture continuously since that year.

Is Johnson a manufacturer or a distributor?

Johnson is a manufacturer. We design and build every piece in our own South Carolina factory. We do not source finished product from other factories and resell it. This is why our lead times are shorter, our quality control is tighter, and our warranty is honored directly by the people who built the piece.

Can I visit the Johnson factory?

Yes. Buyers, designers, and procurement teams are welcome to tour our facility and inspect construction in person before committing to a full-property program. Call ahead to schedule a visit and we will make sure the right people are on the floor when you arrive.

What industries does Johnson serve?

Johnson manufactures for hotels, resorts, vacation rentals, marine and yacht interiors, multifamily housing, senior living, and educational properties. Any environment where furniture takes daily commercial use and needs to survive a full renovation cycle is our specialty.

What makes Johnson different from other furniture suppliers?

Three things. We manufacture ourselves, so lead times are shorter and quality control is direct. We build with hardwood frames, not particleboard shortcuts, so furniture survives a decade of daily use. We document everything with compliance certificates in every shipment, so your FF and E submission clears review the first time.

What is the best way to start working with Johnson?

Send us a quote request with your property brand, piece count, fabric direction, and target lead time. We respond within one business day with a quote, sample options, and a realistic delivery date. For larger portfolio programs, we recommend a factory visit before the first order ships.
